Schrödinger’s cat – or in this case Schrödinger’s lottery ticket! Until I check it, I live with equal amounts of hope/despair. My thoughts this weekend have been about procrastination and priorities. I am procrastinating in checking the ticket because I’m enjoying fantasising about what I would do if I won £10,000 a month for 30 years, but at the same time it’s a low priority as I don’t need £10,000 right now (although could do with it towards the end of the month!).
There are many reasons why people procrastinate in doing things that are boring, difficult, inconvenient or complex, and would much rather prioritise tasks that are interesting, easy, convenient and give us pleasure. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with a quick win, it feels good to tick things off our To Do list and enjoy a sense of achievement. However if you find yourself constantly selecting the low-hanging fruit and deprioritising harder (and possibly more important) tasks, at some point they are going to become pressing and then you feel overwhelmed and it becomes twice as hard.
I invite you this week to think about some of those things you have been putting off, whether it’s reaching out to someone you haven’t spoken to in a while, making a will or looking at price comparison sites for a good deal on your house/car/pet insurance or energy bills. Just choose one task from your list and set out to achieve it. It might take longer than you thought, and you may need to persevere or ask for help, but when it’s done you’ll feel a greater sense of achievement than completing a handful or easier tasks.
Good luck and have a great start to the week!
You’re quite right. Count to 3 then do it. Also, have another hard-to-do task to hand. You’ll get a huge adrenaline rush from completing it, so get on and do another! Charles x
