The flute
Having previously taught music at secondary school level and worked as a peripatetic teacher, I’m currently available to teach flute and piano lessons (beginners piano) to people of all ages.
As well as teaching the theory and techniques of the instrument I feel I am also able to provide a unique capability; to teach students the art of performance. This comes from my expertise in performing, honed over the last 35+ years, in addition to my M.A. in Music (Performance) and learning experiences with leading flautists in the UK.
In 2017 I did something completely different and volunteered on a Performing Arts programme in the Galapagos islands teaching music and English, read my Volunteer Story to hear all about it!
I’m available evenings and during the day at weekends. Students can either visit me at home (Medway towns) or I’m willing to travel within a reasonable radius of home or central London (week evenings only). If you are interested in taking lessons please contact me, rates available on request.
Composing
Composition was part of my university degree course however it’s not something I do very often. When I was teaching in the Galapagos I was asked to perform for a ‘cultural evening’ by the organisation I was volunteering with.
I apologised and said it wasn’t possible because I had no flute and no music. I then remembered I’d bought a wooden flute on the streets of Kathmandu, Nepal in an earlier part of my journey and composed a piece to perform for them – watch on YouTube!
