Scotland

To Ben Nevis and Beyond!

Where: Scottish Highlands, UK
When: July 2021
Duration: 17 days
Tour operator: Trek organised by Alzheimer’s Society, remainder of the trip was self-directed, with a hire car

Summary

While the trek was my main reason for going to Scotland, it was amazing to see the sights and sounds of the Highlands. It is a wild and wonderful place, with awesome scenery, a fascinating history and friendly people.

There’s something for everyone, whether it be hiking or water activities, visiting Heritage sights, relaxing in a beautiful garden, eating out or going shopping on the Royal Mile. If you’ve yet to visit Scotland, I would highly recommend it!

Ben Nevis (1,345m)

Starting at sea level, the first part of the trek is a steep climb that levels out as you reach the loch – Lochan Meall an t-Suidhe. There are lovely views out over the loch in front and Glen Nevis behind.

You then tackle the infamous ‘zig zags’ where the path becomes rocky, leading to a patch of snow. Once past the snow it is a short distance to the top and a chance to have a rest – before coming back down!
