Today’s thoughts… 10 June 2024

Fitting in a quick post as I’m not going to have much time over the next week or so as I’m off my next adventure soon! We recently said cheerio to one of our team, today’s image is of his ‘celebration’ drinks at the pub. He said he didn’t want leaving drinks, so I called them celebration drinks and he said I made it sound as if we were going to his wake! You can’t please some people…. 😆

When someone leaves a team, and they are as much of a force of nature as our colleague, you do feel a bit bereft. It is estimated that most people spend one third of their life at work, and prior to COVID when we were in the office everyday an average person spent more time with their co-workers than their family. Getting on with the people around you is essential and in a team such as ours it’s easy to form strong bonds, and natural to feel sad when they’re not around.

Our colleague wasn’t with us long, but he made a big impression. Coming from the forces, he brought that military rigour to everything he did and was adamant that he would never change his ways to fit in with civvy street. Consequently we have adopted various of his ‘isms’ and a DSU will never be finished now until someone says “rounds complete”!

Having worked in London for the majority of my working life I now have a wide circle of ex-colleagues who I now call friends. I hope I can add one more person to that circle, and have no doubt that while he might be gone from the halls of UCL he certainly won’t be forgotten.
