Musical highlights

I regularly play the flute and piccolo (and occasionally percussion) and sing in various orchestral and choral concerts in Kent and London. I have performed in a number of unusual places and have some interesting claims to fame.

Early years highlight – solo performance with orchestra:
Cimarosa Concerto in G major for two flutes and orchestra (with Karen Brown and the Old Barn Orchestral Society), aged 16.

Claim to fame:
Performed at BBC Television Centre (London) as part of the BBC’s Music Live event in 2000, and featured on the front cover of the BBC’s internal newspaper Ariel to promote the event.

Most notable competition win:
Class and overall festival winners at my local music festival, performing a duet with Karen Brown.  Subsequently invited to perform at Leeds 2000 (the Millennium Festival of the Amateur Performing Arts) at Leeds Town Hall.

Solo performances:
UCL Chamber Music Club concerts since 2008, regularly appear as a guest in recitals by Karen Brown, and have been featured as a guest soloist in concerts for The Marlowe Singers and The Society of Recorder Players (Kent branch) as well as numerous charity concerts in Kent over the years.

Orchestral performances:
Currently second flute and piccolo (and occasionally first flute / percussion) for the Old Barn Orchestral Society, and deputise in various other local orchestras. I’ve also enjoyed playing in the orchestra for semi-staged charity performances of Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzanz (2022), Iolanthe (2019) and The Mikado (2017).

Ensemble work:
I’ve been part of the Quicksilver flute trio/quartet for over 20 years and a founder member of Trio Concorde. I’m occasionally hired to take part in various scratch orchestras, and regularly perform in ensembles put together for specific UCL Chamber Music Club concerts. One particularly memorable occasion was the premier of Roger Beeson’s The Oxen for choir, flute, clarinet and cello at the 2018 Christmas concert.

Percussion highlights:
The most diverse pieces performed to date have been African Sanctus by David Fanshaw and The Lamentations of Thel by Dmitri Smirnov whilst at school / university.

Flute Masterclasses:
Trevor Wye, Ian Clarke, Ian Mullin, Chris Hankin, Lady Jeanne Galway.

Teachers:
Karen Brown, Lisa Nelsen. Received lessons from Clare Southworth, Ian Clarke and Ruth Morley while at flute courses.
